Welcome to Denbury

Denbury

The earliest evidence of occupation dates back to prehistoric times. Flint tools and burial mounds from the Neolithic era have been discovered in the vicinity. Denbury Down, a wooded hill visible from miles around, is in fact an Iron Age hill fort which was occupied from around 800BC and through the Roman period. Today it is a scheduled monument where you can walk the hill top under a canopy of trees. You will be able to make out the former ditches position of long-gone ramparts and ancient barrows. In springtime, the hill fort is carpeted with bluebells. The village may have grown up around tracks to the earlier fort. It is a cruciform settlement, at the centre of which you will find the old cistern, originally the water supply for the village and now war memorial. St Mary’s church, parts of which date back to the 13th century, is close by. A short distance along South Street you will find the 17th century Denbury Manor, probably built on and incorporating parts of an earlier structure. Is surround by substantial stone walls and has a most impressive entrance via a gate house. Near the village green you will find the Church House Inn, a popular watering hole the origins of which date back to the 14th century. During World War two there was an army camp near Denbury and troops were probably billeted in the village.

Today Denbury is a thriving village with highly rated primary school, village hall, children’s play area and sports field. The popular pub offers the opportunity for social interaction and pleasant dining. The village is well known for its May fair which features a classic car show, displays and various stalls along with a marquee and tables on the green. It tends to have a great atmosphere, unless it’s raining, and is often compѐred by a well know character prominent in the property sector.

We like Denbury. One of the partners lived in a barn conversion there and a senior member of staff still lives in the village. It’s popular with families and those look for a convenient rural setting in an attractive location. Property stock spans the centuries from old world cottages to modern executive-style homes. Some sympathetic development is ongoing.
